You've probably seen Keepsake Artist Bob Kolar's work on the printed page, as well as on the Christmas tree.

He's written and illustrated a number of children's books, among them "Do You Want to Play?" and "Racer Dogs." He also illustrated "AlphaOops!," written by Alethea Kontis, a book that was named a National Council of Teachers of English Notable Children’s Book in the Language Arts.

And to think none of that would have come to pass had he been able to make a respectable racecar back in the day.

"I think my interest in art started with the horribly bad Pinewood derby car I made in Cub Scouts," Bob says. "I remember people laughing at how bad it looked. It motivated me to prove that I could do it well."

Among his other sources of youthful inspiration, he lists Saturday-morning cartoons and the uncounted cool toys he discovered in Sears and JCPenney Christmas catalogs. He credits other Hallmark artists for inspiring him, as well.

"The artists I've worked with have had the greatest impact on my work," he says.
